Our phones, PCs, and tablets have become an integral part of our everyday lives. One way to ensure your devices get things done more efficiently is to keep them in tip-top shape. Doing a little regular device maintenance can help you get long-term use out of your technology solutions and maximize your investment. Improve your productivity with these five easy device maintenance tips to clean up your devices and boost your productivity.
Back-Up Important Files
Disasters happen, and data can be lost easily. If you’re not backing up your mobile device and computer regularly, now is a great time to start. If backing up your entire device seems intimidating, start by just focusing on backing up your most important files. A cloud storage and file syncing service like Dropbox is a great option.
As an extra step, it can also be helpful to add in deleting unnecessary files. Unused files can take up space on your device and impact things like your battery usage, storage space, and more. If you don’t want to delete them, consider making a folder in your cloud-based storage so you can move them off your device for an extended period in the meantime.
Transfer Videos and Photos
Today, most people use their smartphones as cameras and therefore accumulate many, many photos over time. All of these photos can back up your phone, slowing it down. To speed up load times, transferring photos off your smartphone and putting them somewhere safe such as a computer that is regularly backed up can be a great option. There are also many online storage services that have apps designed specially to move photos easily.
Remove Unused Apps
One way to easily clean up your devices is to remove apps that you don’t use or need. Apps running in the background can significantly drain your smartphone’s battery, meaning that deleting battery draining apps can be a great habit to develop. Don’t forget to also delete stock apps that you don’t use – and if you can’t delete them, designate them for sleep mode, as is possible with Android or Samsung devices.
If you have an Android smartphone, you can start by checking unused apps in your device settings where it also identifies battery draining apps and even all the apps that have been put into sleep mode. It can also tell you on a per app basis which ones drain power and how much battery it uses daily.
On iOS, there is a setting available that will delete apps that you have not used in a while if the space on your phone runs low. You can find this option by going to Settings>General>iPhone Storage>Offload Unused Apps. This will free up more space on your device for other apps that you may use more often.
Unsubscribe from Bulk Email
Email subscriptions that you no longer want can fill up your inbox. Unsubscribe from all of the stuff you never open or read to clear up space for more important emails. By law, marketing emails are required to have an unsubscribe link at the bottom. However, it’s usually in small print, and it may take some time to locate it. Take some time to mass unsubscribe to emails you no longer want and make it a habit to unsubscribe as you go forward. Finally, get in the habit of deleting emails you don’t want rather than leaving them in your inbox.
Clear Your Cache and Dump Your Trash
Many people have never cleared their browser cache or history from their computer, smartphone, or tablet! This can significantly slow your device and take up storage. For most browsers, you can look for the History option to clear it. Although you don’t need to clear your history or login details, clearing your cache can helps speed up your device and saves battery power. Don’t forget to delete unneeded digital information such as old texts, Instagram search history, and WhatsApp archives.
Also make sure to empty your trash bin on your computer, which can hold on to deleted files and slow down your device. On your mobile device, check your deleted photos and permanently delete them, as well as emails or files stored on your device.
